Did you have confidence and courage in your late teens and early 20s?

Did you then start to question and doubt yourself as you got older?

Do you now wish to regain your confidence and conviction?

Well, you're normal. When I was 17 years old, I applied to colleges and aimed to go to Northwestern University as my top option. My guidance counselor told me I wouldn't be able to get in for a variety of reasons. (I don't think he was trying to put me down. In his way, I believe he was trying to protect my feelings.) But, his dismissal fueled my fire.

I worked extra hard on my essays, asking friends and family to review them to make sure they read well. Plus, I was sure to share all of the extracurricular activities that represented the whole me. One problem I couldn't resolve was my test scores on the ACT and SAT. They were ok, but they were not Northwestern scores. But, I still went for it — and I was accepted! I can still remember going to the mailbox and receiving my acceptance letter. I also remember going back to my high school homecoming my freshman year in college and seeing that guidance counselor. When he asked how I liked NU, I proudly responded, "I love it!"

So, one would think I held onto that fight in me. And, in many ways, I did. But when the next opportunity came for me to make a change in my life, I felt doubt. I wanted to transition from marketing on the client side to working at an agency. However, I kept hearing that if I didn't have experience in advertising, it would be difficult to get a job in an agency. So I hesitated — but then I got to work on figuring out how I could still get the job I dreamed about while having less experience than others. I took steps to figure out what was required and learned how to translate my current skills to my potential new position. I ended up getting a job with an ad agency working on clients such as McDonald's, Unilever and Anheuser-Busch theme parks. Again, I felt proud. It felt great to be trusted to work on such big brands.

Finally, I ended up wanting to make the biggest change of my life, going from working in advertising to becoming a certified life and career coach. This seemed like the least qualified I had ever been for a job. But, I found a way to translate my education and work experiences to make them relevant for coaching. Plus, I noticed people wanted to work with someone who they could connect with and trust. I'm so grateful to share I've been coaching in my own business for over 12 years now.

Obviously, my confidence dipped as I got older, but I was able to recover as I went for my career transitions. What helped me and what you need to remember on your journey toward a dream is that you are not a statistic. Your individual talents and strengths can attract exactly what you desire. You can learn what you need to fill the gaps from where you are now to where you want to head. Most importantly, your personality factors in. People make decisions emotionally and post-rationalize their decisions. So, the combination of all of these factors impacts the results you achieve, not just qualifications on a résumé. You are more than your résumé, so your confidence needs to be based on more than a list of accomplishments.

How can you reconnect with your confidence and get that new job?

If you're struggling with making a transition and questioning if you're qualified for a new position, please consider the following tips to make your transition not only possible but also probable.

Start Small

• Have informational interviews to find out what is really required for a certain position.

• Take steps to fill the gap between where you are now and where you need to be to get the job.

Notice Negative Thoughts That Arise

• Recognize if you're embracing others' negative thinking.

• If it's your own thinking, reframe the thought by asking yourself what else is possibly true about your situation.

Have Courage

• Remember, courage is not the absence of fear; it's taking action despite the fear.

• Take a step toward your goal, and you'll find it easier to take the next step, and then the next one, and so on.

Acknowledge Your Wins

• Notice a quality within yourself or an accomplishment that helped you get a step further on your journey.

• Allow this acknowledgment to elevate how you feel about yourself and motivate you to take another positive step.

Highlight Your Soft Skills

• Ask friends, family and colleagues what they admire most about you or what they think your strengths are.

• Weave these skills into your online profiles and résumés.

Find People Who Inspire You, And See What They Did

• Take time to research what your heroes did on their journeys.

• Learning that everyone has to overcome obstacles can be inspiring.

I hope you can see that there are ways to refuel your confidence with these tips. You can now take steps toward rebuilding your confidence to get you closer to the dream job you desire and career you love.

Everyone who has experienced one can remember their first panic attack. Mine came in my third year, while on a year abroad at UCLA, when I stopped on the side of the road on the walk home from another long shift at the coffee shop I worked in, partially hid myself in some bushes (no idea why) and hyperventilated and sobbed while passers-by awkwardly skirted around me. After calming down somewhat and walking home, I climbed into bed fully clothed and didn’t leave for 24 hours.

I’ve spent a lot of time in university at this point â€" seven years and counting â€" and about halfway into that time I started seriously struggling with anxiety and depression. For various reasons, mostly tied up with my black womanhood and expectations of strength and silence, I've had to work long and hard to have my mental health difficulties recognised and taken seriously by my family, my university, my doctors and especially myself.

Academia has long been a breeding ground for mental health problems â€" a problem that has unfortunately only worsened in recent years, which isn't surprising when you factor in rising fees, falling job security and the general deterioration of the political and environmental world. According to a report by the IPPR, around three-quarters of adults with a mental illness first experience symptoms before the age of 25, and in 2015/16, 15,395 UK-domiciled first-year students disclosed a mental health condition â€" almost five times the number recorded in 2006/07.

It’s clear that something deep-rooted in academia needs to change, but before the culture has been revamped, we still have to survive (and hopefully thrive) in these institutions. Here are some tips and suggestions to keep you going while you are on a low budget, high workload lifestyle at university.

Prepare Before You Arrive

I was unprepared for the force of depression and anxiety that set in while at university. But many of my friends had been experiencing mental health issues from their teenage years. If that's the case for you, you might benefit from making a treatment plan prior to going: get signed up for your term-time GP right away, advise the disability services at your university of your condition so they can set up provisions for you, like extensions on essays and longer library book loans, and get yourself signed up to counselling services outside of your university.

If you are comfortable doing so, alert your personal tutor at university. They are supposed to be your support system, and if anything goes wrong with your exams or essays they will be invaluable when it comes to applying for special circumstances or extensions. On that note, you should absolutely check out what the services are like in your city, particularly if you are from a minority background, as they can sometimes offer free and unlimited counselling.

If you have disclosed a disability to the university, check if the university will allow you an early move-in date, if that will make you feel more comfort in your new home. Bring food, cutlery and crockery you have at home if home represents a safe place for you. Then you'll be all set to...

Build and Sustain Your Support Networks

Both at uni and back home, you need people who can empathise with you, and who you can work with to keep each other healthy. Whatever that looks like for you, try not to overload each other with heavy stuff, and make sure the conversations are two way if you would like to keep those friends. Always ask if the person has the energy to listen to you in that moment. Your friends can’t just absorb pain, so make sure you are checking in with the people you lean on, and that you aren’t leaning overly on one person.

One fantastic system I heard about from a person living with PTSD was that they had given the people in her network numbers, so that when she was suffering she could call them one by one, and if someone was not able to take the call for various reasons she could pass over onto the next number. This meant that no one in the group felt solely responsible for her wellbeing.

Also â€" because these people exist â€" avoid those who constantly perform their stress simply because it’s the "done" thing, or to seem terribly important, or whatever. Remember: it’s also OK to not be stressed. Don’t feel like you have to participate in the fiction of stress or force yourself into stress just to feel as though you are doing university properly.

Prevent a Crash

The party culture of university is something I would recommend. I got it all out of my system very early, and now I spend my evenings with my cat and a glass of wine, which I would not trade for the world. But if you don’t want to be middle-aged at 24 like me, try to look after yourself while you live it up. When it comes to drinking and drugs, keep an eye on your consumption levels and don’t feel like you have to do either to have fun if you don’t want to. I have plenty of teetotal friends who prefer to stay sober because of how that stuff interacts with their mental health or medication. Don’t shame or pressure your friends who make this choice if it isn’t your personal choice either.

Simplify Your Studying

Check what your university and, more specifically, your department offers in terms of deadline extensions. Knowing the policies and what you’re entitled to is pretty helpful. I didn’t realise until my fourth year that my department had a no-questions-asked one week extension policy on essay deadlines, which saved my degree when I finally figured it out in fourth year.

Forget #selfcare and all that Tumblr stuff; if you reach a point where you can reasonably stop working, get up and tidy your workspace. Have a cup of tea and a cigarette. This will reset your mind for the next chunk of work. Try not to procrastinate and let the break become the rest of the day, but if it does, no big deal. You’ve done something productive like cleaning, and it means you have a nicer space to return to. Don’t waste more time regretting wasted time; refocus on the time you have left and how you can use that effectively.

FYI, if you can’t work in silence, try listening to white noise playlists or something similar. Music or TV can be a distraction, but chill-hop / trip-hop on YouTube is really comforting because the music is static and repetitive enough to ignore and get work done, but quite decent too. Meanwhile, make sure you...

Get That Nourishment In

Who has the time to work out, get your ten-a-day, or whatever it is now, have a part-time job and keep up with academia? Try to cook in bulk, and in as few pots as possible. Tidy as you go while something is boiling, then plate up directly into Tupperware. This minimises clean-up, you can eat from the Tupperware, it’s transportable, just an all-round winner. I’m also a sucker for bulk-buying household products like wet wipes (you will need mountains of these) and loo-roll from Groupon. It’s a bargain and you can get that good shit like Cusheen instead of wiping with sandpapery one-ply like the broke student you are. Finally, if you hate exercising as much as I do and will find any excuse not to do it, sleep in your activewear, so you can roll out of bed and go directly to the gym. If all of this wasn't enough, know how to...

Look After Yourself While You’re in the Middle of a 'Breakdown'

Now is the time to start modifying your tasks. You can’t be as productive as you usually would be while in a depression slump, that’s just a fact. If you can’t write right now, can you read? Can you take notes? Back to that support network: ask your friends to take photos of their notes so you can at least copy or digest them in your own time. My friends will always notice when I’m en route to collapse before I do â€" if your friend tells you about your triggers and checks in on you, take heed! If you have to stop, you have to stop. If you fell asleep, you had to sleep.

As a black woman, one telltale sign of my depression is difficult to hide â€" I lose the energy and will to moisturise, and ashy skin is unforgiving. Some products that really help me are Lush’s "Scrubbee" and "Buffy" bars (not #sponcon), or if that’s not accessible or affordable, plain old coconut oil or baby oil will do it. You can wash, rinse, apply oil (rinse again if you choose) then step out and go about your day without fearing judgmental looks from fellow black women on the street. In a similar vein, try to put your hair away. I pull my hair out when I’m anxious, so if I feel a slump coming along, I put my hair in braids so I won’t do too much damage to my edges.

You survived another bad patch and you’re feeling better. Probably time to start some...

Post-Depression Admin

When you're well, make a doctor's appointment. You'll need a trail of doctor's notes in case anything goes wrong with your grades and you need to apply for special circumstances. Also, contact your tutors when you're unwell â€" the email trail will be useful. Remember, people can’t help you unless you tell them what's wrong. These emails can be an anxiety-ridden experience to send. Time to call on that social network once again: draft the email, get a friend to read it and hit send if you aren’t able to. Can you give your friends permission to act on your behalf with your doctor, in regards to making appointments for you?

Take some time to think about what changes you can make to your lifestyle to avoid your triggers. Do you need to think about time management, cancel some things? Take more time to eat healthily? Exercise more? Whatever it is, try to build some time to reflect on how you can feel better. If that ends up being medication â€" on doctor’s advice â€" I would recommend starting over the summer holidays. They can take some time to adjust to and find your dosage.

If there’s anything I've learned about mental health, it's what a ~journey it is for everyone as it interacts with our personalities and identities in such unique ways. I still don't manage to take all of my own suggestions (who does?), but put some of this into practice and you'll be a long way from talking about your first panic attack and wincing about diving into some bushes.

Rianna Walcott and co-editor Dr Samara Linton edited an anthology about black, asian and ethnic minority experiences of mental health in the UK called 'The Colour of Madness'.

They can not only point out mistakes but also provide a short analysis of an essay. Maybe there is something unclear in terms of facts or ideas, or some sentences are grammatically incorrect, and you do not notice it. U.S. News has compiled several college essay examples that helped students get into school. Shared by admissions staff, these essays stand out, they say, because the student voices shine, helping the school get to know them.

No college application is complete without the personal essay, which can be daunting for many students to write.

But a few simple tips, some introspection and insight into what admissions officers are looking for can help ease the pressure. U.S. News has compiled several college essay examples that helped students get into school. Shared by admissions staff, these essays stand out, they say, because the student voices shine, helping the school get to know them.

"We're actually listening for a student's voice and trying to figure out who they would be on our campus," says Karen Richardson, dean of admissions and enrollment management at Tufts University in Massachusetts. "It's not just about the topic that a student chooses to write on, but rather, how they write about it. We encourage students to show rather than tell to help the reader get a sense of who they are."

Experts say the essay should give the school a sample of his or her personality.

"A good essay to me, in general, is one where I learn something about the student that I wouldn't learn elsewhere in the application," says Monica Inzer, vice president for enrollment management at Hamilton College in New York.

[Read: What Admissions Officers Think of 3 Common College Essay Topics.]

But finding their voice can be a challenge for many students, Inzer notes, because they may have limited life experience. Also, she adds, they have been writing to the instructions of high school teachers up until this point, rather than for themselves. Finding their voice means students must get to know themselves and write authoritatively, sharing a sense of their lives with admissions officers.

On its admissions page, Hamilton lists multiple college essay examples written by students admitted to the school. Though Inzer declined to single out one essay, she says that the examples offer a diverse mix of student voices and backgrounds. The essay excerpted below, with the permission of Hamilton College, shows the student's personality through a love of fly-fishing.

I kept a firm grip on the rainbow trout as I removed the lure from its lip. Then, my heart racing with excitement, I lowered the fish to the water and watched it flash away.

    I remained hooked.

I caught that 10-inch fryling five years ago on Fall Creek using a $5 fly rod given to me by my neighbor Gil. The creek is spectacular as it cascades down the 150-foot drop of Ithaca Falls. Only 100-feet further, however, it runs past a decrepit gun factory and underneath a graffitied bridge before flowing adjacent to my high school and out to Cayuga Lake. Aside from the falls, the creek is largely overlooked. Nearly all of the high school students I know who cross that bridge daily do so with no thought of the creek below.

When I was a toddler, my moms say I used to point and ask, "What? What? What?" Even now my inquisitive nature is obvious. Unlike my friends, I had noticed people fly fishing in Fall Creek. Mesmerized by their graceful casts, I pestered Gil into teaching me. From that first thrilling encounter with a trout, I knew I needed to catch more. I had a new string of questions. I wanted to understand trout behavior, how to find them, and what they ate. There was research to do.

I devoted myself to fly fishing. I asked questions. I woke up at 4 a.m. to fish before school. I spent days not catching anything. Yet, I persisted. The Kid's Book of Fishing was replaced by Norman MacLean's A River Runs Through It. Soon Ernest Hemingway's essays found their place next to Trout Unlimited magazines by my bed.

I sought teachers. I continued to fish with Gil, and at his invitation joined the local Trout Unlimited Chapter. I enrolled in a fly-tying class.

There I met Ken, a soft-spoken molecular biologist, who taught me to start each fly I make by crimping the hook to reduce harm to fish, and Mike, a sarcastic Deadhead lawyer, who turns over rocks at all times of year to "match the hatch" and figure out which insects fish are eating. Thanks to my mentors, I can identify and create almost every type of Northeastern mayfly, caddisfly, and stonefly.

The more I learned, the more protective I felt of the creek and its inhabitants. My knowledge of mayflies and experience fishing in many New York streams led me to notice the lack of Blue-Winged Olive Mayflies in Fall Creek. I figured out why while discussing water quality in my AP Biology class; lead from the gun factory had contaminated the creek and ruined the mayfly habitat. Now, I participate in stream clean-up days, have documented the impact of invasive species on trout and other native fish, and have chosen to continue to explore the effects of pollutants on waterways in my AP Environmental Science class.

Last year, on a frigid October morning, I started a conversation with the man fishing next to me. Banks, I later learned, is a contemporary artist who nearly died struggling with a heroin addiction. When we meet on the creek these days we talk about casting techniques, aquatic insects, and fishing ethics. We also talk about the healing power of fly fishing. I know Banks would agree with Henry David Thoreau, who wrote "[Many men] lay so much stress on the fish which they catch or fail to catch, and on nothing else, as if there were nothing else to be caught."

Initially, my goal was to catch trout. What I landed was a passion. Thanks to that first morning on Fall Creek, I've found a calling that consumes my free time, compels me to teach fly fishing to others, and drives what I want to study in college.

I will be leaving Fall Creek soon. I am eager to step into new streams.

"It's more about the voice than anything else," Inzer says, noting an essay that is too clinical can mute a student's personality.

"You can think of the essay as the soul of the application. While we recognize that it takes years of hard work and dedication to build a strong college application over a high school career, what helps an admissions committee picture you in our classrooms, in our clubs and in our community is your own voice and perspective," says Ellen Kim, dean of undergraduate admissions at Maryland's Johns Hopkins University.

"The essay is a space for us to see that come to life. The committee isn't looking for any one thing in particular because part of what is so telling is what the student felt was important to share about themselves in that space," Kim says.

[Read: The Common App: Everything You Need to Know.]

Some colleges require a supplemental essay in addition to the personal essay. Typically, admissions pros note, these essays are shorter and focus on answering a specific question posed by the college.

In some cases though, the school may emphasize the supplemental essay as a top priority. That's the case at St. John's College, which has campuses in Maryland and New Mexico, says Benjamin Baum, vice president of enrollment for the St. John's system.

"We call it supplemental, but actually, it's the most important essay that the students will write as a part of our application," Baum says, adding that it allows the school to tailor questions for applicants around topics that are academic priorities at St. John's.

Experts say supplemental essays tend to be short, but St. John's College bucks that trend, requiring a minimum of 400 words. That's because the school is interested in seeing students write at length on a chosen topic.

Baum highlights this supplemental essay on a student's love for political and legal philosophy as a strong example:

Last year in my Constitutional Law class, I fell in love with political and legal philosophy. Sexy, right?

Maybe not, but I loved the rules, the structure, and the big questions that surrounded organizing a government. I thought about these things constantly–while brushing my teeth, doing chores, and driving to school. Unable to take this beloved course a second time, I chose my senior classes with more than a touch of melancholy. I was skeptical that even the most appealing humanities class, AP Literature, would be anything but anticlimactic by comparison. I'd become so accustomed to reading the function-focused writings of Locke, Rousseau, Madison, Thoreau, that I found it difficult to see "literature" as anything more than mere stories. I wanted substance that I could actually do something with, and I didn't expect to find it in AP Lit.

Settling down to read our first assigned book, Sophocles' Antigone, I was apathetic. We'd done a pre-reading exercise earlier in class and I'd gathered that Antigone was just the sad story of a wannabe-martyr-descendant-of-Oedipus who crosses the wrong king, dies, breaks her fiance's heart with her death, leading him, and her would-be mother-in-law by extension, to suicide, blah, blah, blah. I fanned the pages with my thumb, checked the time (10:15 p.m.), and willed myself to make it through the first ten pages without falling asleep.

Rousseau's familiar skepticism of an unchecked ruler, Locke's notions of natural rights philosophy, and Thoreau's willingness to violate immoral laws. Wait–this was a literature class, and yet here was Sophocles articulating the same concerns of the Framers of the Constitution (hundreds of years before any of them were born).

Antigone has become my favorite book because it wraps political and legal theory around complex characters and a compelling narrative. Prior to reading Antigone , I assumed that if I hadn't read every book that pertained to the architecture of US government, I had at least heard of them. But I was so mistaken. Antigone proved this assumption wrong because Antigone itself was a case study in the actual consequences of ideas discussed by political philosophers. In other words, Antigonehumanized the esoteric and function-driven debates I'd studied last year. Witnessing Haemon cradle his dead fiance in his arms, then subsequently kill himself before his father's eyes, allowed me to see all of the ideas I'd spent hours considering as not purely political questions, but as human ones. Finishing the play, I was ashamed that I'd harbored such skepticism at the outset of my reading. My experience with Antigone reminds me why I get excited each time I use calculus in physics or ar t in cooking, and I look forward to a lifetime of making these connections.

From a compelling opening line to the emphasis on the subject matter, Baum says this example stands out because of the student's "intellectual enthusiasm." Her embrace of in-depth academic concepts signaled to the admissions team that she was a good fit for the college.

While St. Johns College may ask for more in-depth answers, other schools value brevity, challenging students to write concisely. One such example, shared by Tufts, takes the reader from the student's love of origami to a passion for science in less than 250 words.

Using a flimsy piece of printer paper, I remember folding my first paper crane. Reading instructions off a dusty origami book from my basement, my fingers fumbled with the paper, folding, unfolding, refolding, and possibly some frustration-induced crumpling. Nearly an hour later, with little creases scattered across its body and a misaligned beak, it was clear that origami wasn't a natural talent of mine.

Despite its deformities, there was an endearing quality to the bird I couldn't quite explain. After sixteen folds, it resembled the paper only in color and material. I would fold countless other designs, until my room was covered with creations from simple paper boats to intricate seven part lotus flowers.

The joy I found in origami lied in the fact that I had the freedom to invent anything; with each fold, creativity flowed through my fingers, converting curiosity of the potential of each fold into an irrepressible desire to create more. It is what motivated me to read about 2D kinematics to win a projectile motion challenge, and understand the chemistry behind qualitative analysis of cations for a lab.

Everything I could ever want to know and more is right at my fingertips. From the change in weight I feel in a moving elevator, to the chemical reactions that cause the plastic stars in my room to glow, science is a field that permeates every single aspect of life. I know my curiosity to understand the world around me nurtures my love for science.

Richardson says that the appeal of an essay on an atypical topic such as origami showed that the writer was willing to take risks.

"Origami isn't a typical topic for a college essay, but, beyond that, she showed us rather than told us about her process of making objects that didn't always turn out how she expected or wanted. Still, she kept trying. It helps us to see her as someone who would be willing to jump into new experiences on our campus. What also stands out here is the imagery she uses to get her point across — I could picture the crumpled pieces of paper on her floor and the frustration that she felt. In the end, she was able to tie her creative process making origami to her academic interests," Richardson wrote in an email.

When it comes to writing a college admissions essay — whether personal or supplemental — experts advise students to follow the same rules: find their voice, write about a topic that matters to them, share their personality, express themselves and proofread extensively. On the latter point, experts suggest students share their essay with someone who knows them well before submitting it.

Teachers, friends and parents can all be helpful proofreaders, but experts note that the student voice should remain intact.

"The essay really needs to be the student's work. I encourage students to ask people close to them to read the essay and ask 'would you know this essay is about me?' If not, it's time to rework the essay. But make sure it's still your voice," Richardson says.

Inzer also encourages students not to stress too much over the essay and put unnecessary weight on it as part of their college application. While a strong essay may elevate a candidate in a crowded field, she says it doesn't make or break an application.

"That alone won't get them in; it's their grades and hard work and lots of other things. But it might get them an extra look, especially at a highly selective place where there are lots of strong candidates," Inzer says.

    1.     Pick a Question:

Before you ask how to start a college paper, you should look at the paper question. Most of the time, you're assigned this question, and your job is to provide readers with a relevant answer they reach when they read the paper you've finished. If you are allowed to pick a question, make sure that it's not too broad, so you won't be lost trying to gather data. At the same time, the question shouldn't be too narrow or restrictive because you might not find lots of sources.

    2.     Gather Sources for your College Paper:

If you're asking how to write a good paper in college, then you've probably tried to find the answer online. There are lots of online sources that are accessible and available around the clock. However, some of these sources aren't academically accessible. You should probably spend more time at the library to find good and relevant sources that you can use in your task. Ask a professor or teacher for advice, if possible. You can also check a reputable service and ask an expert for recommendations.

    3.     Start Taking Notes Before Writing:

As a matter of fact, the most critical step in writing a paper or essay occurs before you start writing. This is when you start collecting information from multiple sources. Start by taking notes every time you check a book or a website. Write down information for future references. Compare your data and make relations between the pieces of information collected.

A mind map is a great tool that can help you while writing essays and papers. You can find several examples online that you can follow while composing an academic assignment. Link the main question to other relevant ideas so you can get enough data for your task.

    4.     Draft an Outline:

This is the format that your paper should follow. Start with an introduction that presents the main question or topic. Follow this by the body where you include your data and information. Each paragraph should focus on a specific topic statement, followed by a piece of evidence that proves your point. The conclusion of your paper should sum up the research and provide readers with any answers they might ask while reading the assignment.

In this stage, you shouldn't worry about the writing itself. Plot points to make sure that they follow a logical sequence. You can check several writing services or online sources to make sure that you're following the proper college level paper format.

A lot of students don't know how to head a paper in college. You can do this after you finish writing. When you're done, you'll have a clear idea of what should be included in the introduction and heading.

    5.     Start Writing:

Now it's time to compose your well-researched paper in a way that will attract readers' attention and show your professor that you've worked hard to finish your task. Check the required citation style and don't forget to cite your work properly. This way, you won't be accused of plagiarism, and your professor will appreciate your effort. Stick to the word count. Trying to use filler sentences to reach the required word count will be penalized. It's recommended to do more research to make sure that you have enough information and data for your assignment.

    6.     Edit and Proofread:

It's time to revise your task. Read it again from the beginning and make sure to delete any mistakes. Make all necessary changes to make sure that your writing is clear and all the information is right. Ask a friend or a professor to read your assignment before submission. Getting a different opinion will help you recognize some mistakes that you might have missed. There are several online tools that can help students detect and fix grammar and punctuation mistakes. Make sure that your assignment is appropriately checked before submitting it.

You can learn how to write paper even if you're not an excellent writer. Practice makes perfect, and you should try to learn from previous feedback. With time, your college papers will attract everyone's attention.

Writing an essay on green living or other environmental issues can be difficult. You need to make sure that you get your points right. One of the issues is that environmental research is changing at a breathtaking pace, so it is easy to use outdated data to make your point.

Creating the Perfect Essay on Climate Change or Any Environmental Topic

Essay writing is a task which poses an immense challenge to many students. This is because it not only has many requirements, but also requires one to have professional writing skills to produce a top-notch paper. This is especially complicated for climate change papers.

Additionally, many students find it hard to distinguish the type of paper they are writing. Hence, they end up producing the wrong article. Environmental science professors and instructors often give college and university students writing assignments.

You need to be familiar with the concepts behind climate change if you are planning on writing a paper on it. You should start by looking at previous papers and research on the topic. Global Change has a large list of all major climate change papers.

However, you are going to need to write your own paper and it needs to meet the school's quality standards. It is up to you to ensure that you understand the distinction between various types of essay writing tasks. Cody Rhodes has been gracious enough to speak with us to clarify what a descriptive essay is and the goal or objective of writing one. Rhodes has said that there are a lot of great insights for people learning to create better papers on climate change.

What is a descriptive essay on Climate Change?

Before we go deeper into descriptive essay writing tips, you need to know what a descriptive essay is. A descriptive essay is a type of academic writing which involves describing a specific place, event, or person to the readers. You must do this in a way that creates a portrait in their minds by engaging their senses: touch, sound, smell, sight, and taste. Your ability to do this guarantees your success. Before you write your descriptive essay, you need to lay the foundation of the entire work.

Choose a topic related to climate change or green living

What topic is best for climate change? You can't just focus on climate change in general, Rhodes tells us. He says that you need to get into the nuances of specific elements of the subject. You might want to talk about the fact that the minimum arctic ice levels have fallen over 12% a decade since the 1980s. Covering a very specific climate change topic makes things easier.

So, you need to select a topic which you can write a lot about. Your professor may give you one or they may leave it up to you to choose. So, ensure you pick a topic which allows you to convey your opinion about it through your description of it and how you want things laid out for the audience.

Also, you must ensure you structure your essay in a way that helps your topic to have meaning or make sense. A description of an event has paragraphs arranged chronologically, whereas a description of a person or a place has paragraphs arranged generally so that it allows you to go deeper into the specifics. The introduction paragraph of your essay should set out the key points you will discuss in your article as it sets the tone for the rest of the paper.

But what do you do once you've chosen your topic? If you need to learn how to write a descriptive essay about a place, event or person consider the following tips.

    Do statement

Now that you have chosen a topic, develop a thesis statement for your climate change topic. An example could be "The hospitality sector's global initiative has contributed to the climate crisis."

A thesis statement is a statement which holds or supports the argument in the topic of your paper. Additionally, it lays out the purpose of the essay. It is prominent throughout the entire paper. Hence, when creating it, you need to make it precise, avoid clichés, and include it in the introductory paragraph.

    Engage your readers' senses

The audience will be able to comprehend what your paper is about if you create an image in their minds by engaging their senses. So, how do you get the senses right?

Take a sheet of paper and partition it into five columns. Note down all the senses. This will help you sort your thoughts and ideas as you elucidate your topic. Write any feelings or sensations which relate to the topic you are writing about. Back up your thesis statement by providing full sensory details. Utilize literary tools to perfect your paper such as personification, similes, and metaphors.

    Write an outline

Once you get the senses right, you can proceed to the next step, which is creating a descriptive essay outline. A descriptive essay outline is essential in writing a descriptive essay as it not only acts as a road map to your essay but also simplifies the writing process. Additionally, it helps to show how the structure of your paper ought to appear.  A descriptive essay outline constitutes three main components: the introduction body, and conclusion.

  • Develop a strong hook which will capture the attention of your audience. They need to be attracted to your paper by reading the introduction. Also, remember to include the thesis statement.
  • Writing a descriptive paragraph(s)is not easy if you do not have a thesis statement. This is because it is where you provide support or backup the thesis statement (shows the purpose of your essay). So, ensure you begin each paragraph with a topic sentence. Use transitional phrases to show the readers that your essay is continuous.
  • Conclude your paper with a summary of your main points. Restate your thesis statement.
  • Create a conclusion

The conclusion of your descriptive essay is fundamental as it shows the reader(s) that your article has come to an end.  It needs to be strong, especially if you are trying to make a case in a subject as controversial as climate change.

So, when creating it, ensure you provide a summary of your key points. Restate your thesis statement. Also, remember not to include any new information which you have not mentioned in your paper.

If you do not know how to structure a descriptive essay, follow the format above or have a look at some of the descriptive essay examples written by other students or professionals.

    Polish and finish

You can begin writing your essay now that you have a guiding map (outline) you can use. After writing your paper, ensure you take a break then resume to revise it. Go through it and eliminate all the mistakes you may have made during the writing process. Polish it in a way that ensures you have met all the writing instructions and requirements.

Picture this before you plop yourself down in front of your computer to compose your college application essay: A winter-lit room is crammed with admissions professionals and harried faculty members who sit around a big table covered with files. The admissions people, often young and underpaid, buzz with enthusiasm; the professors frequently pause to take off their glasses and rub their eyes.

These exhausted folks, hopped up from eating too many cookies and brownies, have been sitting in committee meetings for days after spending a couple of months reading applications, most of which look pretty similar: baseball = life, or debate = life, or "I went to a developing country and discovered poor people can be happy."

They wade through long lists of candidates, state by state, region by region. The best applications and the weakest don't come to committee. It's the gigantic stack in the middle that warrants discussion.

The truth is, most essays are typical. Many are boring. Some are just plain bad. But occasionally one will make an admissions officer tear down the hallway to find a colleague to whom she can say, "You have to read what this Math Olympiad girl said about 'Hamlet.' " Your goal is to write an essay that makes someone fall in love with you.

Once you commit the time and emotional energy to get your butt in the chair to write, you face a daunting task — figuring out what to write about. If you're stuck, you're in good company. With so much freedom, this is a challenge for most students.

Here's a tip: Choose a topic you really want to write about. If the subject doesn't matter to you, it won't matter to the reader. Write about whatever keeps you up at night. That might be cars, or coffee. It might be your favorite book or t he Pythagorean theorem. It might be why you don't believe in evolution or how you think kale must have hired a PR firm to get people to eat it.

A good topic will be complex. In school, you were probably encouraged to write papers that took a side. That's fine in academic work when you're being asked to argue in support of a position, but in a personal essay, you want to express more nuanced thinking and explore your own clashing emotions. In an essay, conflict is good.

For example, "I love my mom. She's my best friend. We share clothes and watch 'The Real Housewives' of three different cities together" does not make for a good essay. "I love my mom even though she makes me clean my room, hates my guinea pig and is crazy about disgusting food like kale" could lead somewhere

While the personal essay has to be personal, a reader can learn a lot about you from wha tever you choose to focus on and how you describe it. One of my favorites from when I worked in admissions at Duke University started out, "My car and I are a lot alike." The writer then described a car that smelled like wet dog and went from 0 to 60 in, well, it never quite got to 60.

Another guy wrote about making kimchi with his mom. They would go into the garage and talk, really talk: "Once my mom said to me in a thick Korean accent, 'Every time you have sex, I want you to make sure and use a condo.' I instantly burst into laughter and said, 'Mom, that could get kind of expensive!' " A girl wrote about her feminist mother's decision to get breast implants.

A car, kimchi, Mom's upsizing — the writers used these objects as vehicles to get at what they had come to say. They allowed the writer to explore the real subject: This is who I am.

Don't brag abo ut your achievements. Instead, look at times you've struggled or, even better, failed. Failure is essayistic gold. Figure out what you've learned. Write about that. Be honest and say the hardest things you can. And remember those exhausted admissions officers sitting around a table in the winter. Jolt them out of their sugar coma and give them something to be excited about.

REPEATING THE PROMPT Admissions officers know what's on their applications. Don't begin, "A time that I failed was when I tried to beat up my little brother and I realized he was bigger than me." You can start right in: "As I pulled my arm back to throw a punch, it struck me: My brother had gotten big. Bigger than me."

LEAVE WEBSTER'S OUT OF IT Unless you're using a word like "prink" (primp) or "demotic" (popular) or "couloir" (deep gorge), you can assume your reader knows the definition of the words you've wri tten. You're better off not starting your essay with "According to Webster's Dictionary . . . ."

THE EPIGRAPH Many essays start with a quote from another writer. When you have a limited amount of space, you don't want to give precious real estate to someone else's words.

YOU ARE THERE! When writing about past events, the present tense doesn't allow for reflection. All you can do is tell the story. This happens, then this happens, then this happens. Some beginning writers think the present tense makes for more exciting reading. You'll see this is a fallacy if you pay attention to how many suspenseful novels are written in past tense.

SOUND EFFECTS Ouch! Thwack! Whiz! Whooooosh! Pow! Are you thinking of comic books? Certainly, good writing can benefit from a little onomatopoeia. Clunk is a good one. Or fizz. But once you start adding exclamation points, you're wad ing into troubled waters. Do not start your essay with a bang!

ACTIVE BODY PARTS One way to make your reader giggle is to give body parts their own agency. When you write a line like "His hands threw up," the reader might get a visual image of hands barfing. "My eyes fell to the floor." Ick.

CLICHÉS THINK YOUR THOUGHTS FOR YOU Here's one: There is nothing new under the sun. We steal phrases and ideas all the time. George Orwell's advice: "Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print."

TO BE OR NOT TO BE Get rid of "to be" verbs. Replace "was" in "The essay was written by a student; it was amazing and delightful" and you'll get: "The student's essay amazed and delighted me." We've moved from a static description to a sprightlier one and cut the word count almost in half.

WORD PACKAGES Some phrases — free gift, personal beliefs, final outcome, very unique — come in a package we don't bother to unpack. They're redundant.

RULES TO IGNORE In English class, you may have to follow a list of rules your teacher says are necessary for good grammar: Don't use contractions. No sentence fragments. It's imperative to always avoid split infinitives. Ending on a preposition is the sort of English up with which teachers will not put. And don't begin a sentence with a conjunction like "and" or "but" or "because." Pick up a good book. You'll see that the best authors ignore these fussy, fusty rules.
